Poomala is one of the popular tourist hill stations in India. This place situated in a calm and serene atmosphere and from the top of the hill we can view Thrissur town. There is a dam in Poomala named Poomala dam, for irrigation purpose. This is one of the oldest dams and has a mud and stone construction. people can reach here From Thrissur town by traveling  7 km to Thirur Town and then take  right turn at Waylord to Poomala Hills.  Poomala dam is situated about 15 km from Thrissur town.

…Commissioned in  1968, this is an irrigation purpose dam located about 12 kms east of Thrissur town in the Mulankunnathu panchayat . The ever stretching greenery, grasslands and waterfalls is a must see.  This new tourist centre features ecofriendly measures and comprises a walkaway  with handrails spanning  600 m, a cafeteria  and a community hall. The whole area is absolutely mindblowing and this place of grasslands and waters is a any photographers dream.

Poomala Dam is  an easy destination for families. Relax with your family in the River side park which has awesome views of the water filled dam and lush greenery and view of adjacent hills. Boating & fishing are really thrilling at this place but there are no vendors offering boats for cruise, you will have to pre-arrange it yourself.

Poomala dam is an irrigation project of Kerala government which handed over in early 1968. Dam is up approximately 95 metres above sea level. In 2010 this place has been announced as tourist attraction by state government and facilitated basic amenities for the tourists including rest rooms, community hall and refreshment stall.
